Legume trees are planted with the aim of increasing / improving soil fertility through improved fallow (intercropping), intercropping, and relay cropping / hedge row. The trees used here are those that have the ability to add nitrogen nutrients to the soil, producing large amounts of leaves that rot quickly and add compost.
