Ernest Mboya holds a BSc in Agronomic Engineering from the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Mozambique and he has been working on biochar research projects under department of Soil, Water and Rural Engineering of UEM to 2022 before joining TARI. His work involved pirolyzer and biochar production for soil improvement, C-Sequestration and climate change mitigation contributing to sustainable agricultural solutions.

He contributed to maize breeding project with SEEDCO-Zimbabwe, focusing on pest resistance, improving yield and cob-rot disease tolerance through meticulous field research and data collection at TARI Kifyulilo. Building on his expertise in crop protection, sustainable agricultural practices, biochar technology and  agronomic research, he transitioned to work on rice crops at TARI Dakawa where his current role at crop protection section involves developing strategies for disease and pest management in rice cultivation, ensuring enhanced productivity and sustainability.

His research interests encompass crop protection, biochar technology, plants biotechnology and nanotechnology. He is passionate about integrating scientific research with practical solution in the auspice of climate change to address agricultural challenges and improve food security.
