Enhancing Farmers' Access to Quality seed by Promoting Improved Rice Varieties in Tanzania

This is a one-year project resulted from longstanding partnerships and relationships between the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) under its Seed Systems Product Management Program (SSPM) and is implemented by four centres of TARI namely Dakawa, Ifakara, Uyole and Ukiriguru starting from 2023 rice growing season.

Objectives of the project

The objectives of this project are:

  1. to disseminate newly released improved rice varieties to farmers and other stakeholders in the rice value chain in rice growing areas, in both rain-fed and irrigated lowlands;
  2. to accelerate testing of pipe lines of rice for rapid registration and release of a new rice variety.

Project approach

The project deploys following approaches in its implementation:

  • Triadic comparisons of technology options (tricots), and
  • Varietal/crop cafeterias/demonstrations

Project Areas

The project covers 8 regions of Tanzania Mainland namely Iringa, Mbeya, Simiyu, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Tanga, Morogoro and Coast in eighteen districts. TARI Dakawa implements the project in three districts as Mvomero and Kilosa in Morogoro, and Korogwe in Tanga. 

Project budget

The total budget is 297,574,000 TZS; for TARI Dakawa is 51,130,000 TZS  equivalent to 21,757.45 US Dollar; main sponsor is IRRI
