Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute

Establishment

The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) Dakawa Centre was established in 1984 by a joint effort of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; by then called Chollima Agro-Scientific Research Centre. Until today, the centre is famously known by the natives as 'Chollima'.

The centre is located at Dakawa in Mvomero District, about 45 kilometres from Morogoro Municipality, 3km from Morogoro - Dodoma main road, at -6.413789193601474, 37.53537143137759.

After the inception of TARI in 2018, the centre has been mandated to develop and disseminate result-based research outputs on the rice crop. Moreover, it deals with maize and horticultural crops in collaboration with other TARI centres so as to increase farm production and productivity in both lowland and medium-altitude areas of Tanzania Mainland.

The centre is envisioned to become the rice centre of excellence in the eastern, central and southern African regions.

The mission of the centre

TARI Dakawa is commissioned to develop and disseminate results-based- research outputs on rice leading to efficient and resilient farming systems that protect or enhance farmer productivity, improve nutrition and raise net income while reducing reliance on pesticides and fertilizers and contribute to efficient farming that protect or enhance natural resources.
