Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) Selian center staff yesterday commemorated the world soil day by planting over 300 at the center surroundings aiming at restoring the trees and soil conservation.
The Centre Director Dr. Nicholaus Kuboja together with the Country Director of Alliance for Bio varsity and CIAT Teshale Marmo led the occasion by planting trees at the office grounds and encouraged other staff to also plant trees starting at the center surroundings to their homes.
The Head of Natural Resources Management Section at TARI Selian Richard Temba said that planting trees will be useful for the soil as large trees are excellent filters for pollutants and also trees provide habitat, food and protection of plants and animals hence increasing urban biodiversity.
One of the TARI Selian staff Godfrey Kessy added that trees prevent soil erosion, the fallen leaves when decomposing improves soil layers and also trees are very important in generating and regulating the air that is used by human and plants.
World Soil day which was celebrated December 5, 2024 this year had the theme of, “Caring for soils: Measure, Monitor and Manage”.
