TARI Selian Center strategizes to enhance adoption of improved wheat varierties

TARI Selian Center conducted a strategic mission in four districts ( Monduli, Karatu, Arumeru and Siha) to enhance adoption of improved wheat varieties. The primary objective for the mission were to create awareness on available improved wheat varieties with high yield and good quality; enable farmers to identify most preferrable varieties and share the feedback to researchers; evaluate varieties of selected candidates and checks.
To achieve the mission, a total number of 8 demonstration plots, 3 experimental trials and 3 farmers' assessment plots were established in the selected areas. In Monduli the selected areas were Emairete and Landikinya; in Karatu- Kambi ya Simba and Rhotia; in Arumeru Olchovoros and Likamba; and in Siha-Namwai.
For demonstration plots 5 improved wheat varieties were used- Sifa, Chiriku, Shangwe, Merina and Ngoli; for experimental trials- 23 genotypes and 3 cheks- Lumbesa, Shangwe and Ngoli were used; and for farmers' assessment candidates were Pweza, Kasuku, Hyrax, Njbw II and Jacana. The local checks in farmers' assessement were Merina, Sifa, Shangwe and Chiriku
