Farmers advised to visit research centers to learn different Improved/Good Agricultural Technologies

Farmers from Mkuranga District in Coastal Region have been advised to use the opportunity to learn and use different agricultural technologies such as Good Agronomic Practices (GAP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Intercropping etc from different research centers including Mkuranga sub-station that is under Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute, Mikocheni Center (TARI Mikocheni). Farmers should use improved/good agricultural technologies so that they can increase the productivity in coconut farming and other crops.

Dr. Fred Tairo, TARI Mikocheni Center Manager said this statement during Farmer Field Day (FFD) held on 11 June, 2024 at Mkuranga Sub-station. “In our centers there are experts, so I invite farmers to come and learn these Agricultural Technologies in the coconut crop and other crops so that they can increase productivity in agriculture” said Dr. Tairo.

In addition, Dr. Geradina Mzena – Director for Technology Transfer and Partnership (DTTP) from TARI Headquarter has urged farmers to use the research results that has already been discovered by researchers where among the knowledge and Agricultural Technologies are disseminated through Farmer Field Day (FFD).

Speaking at the event, Mkuranga District Commissioner, Hon. Khadija Nassir has advised farmers to follow the advice given by experts to increase productivity in agriculture.

On his part, Fikirini Mtanga – coconut farmers’ representative from Dundani Village, Mkuranga District in Coastal region explained on how he benefited from using improved agricultural technologies such as intercropping coconut crop with other crops example mangoes and oranges that helps in controlling of insect pests including coconut mites and mosquitoes hence increasing productivity in agriculture.
